ALERT: Updates Regarding Home Ventilation Equipment
Connected Care Quick Hits are up to date and evidence based recommendations for the care of children with medical complexity & technology dependence, from hospital to home.
ALERT: Updates Regarding Home Ventilation Equipment
SITUATION:
This QuickHit was prompted by Philips Respironics' announcement regarding the discontinuation of the Trilogy 200 portable home ventilator model. The servicing of this ventilator will cease in December 2025. In response, the Ontario Ventilator Equipment Pool (VEP), in partnership with clinical teams, has initiated the transition of children on home ventilation from the Trilogy 200 to the ResMed Astral 150.
BACKGROUND:
Children with medical complexity may require invasive or non-invasive ventilation after hospitalization in home or community. To promote patient safety, in transition to a new brand of ventilator, it is important that family caregivers and providers access training on operating the new device before it is used in the home and community.
ASSESSMENT:
The Trilogy 200 ventilator is being replaced by the Astral 150 ventilator as directed by the Ontario Ventilator Equipment Pool. The change will take place over the next few months for children already receiving home mechanical ventilation in the community. For children starting on home mechanical ventilation for the first time, the change will occur at the time of discharge from hospital to home and community care.
RECOMMENDATION:
Connected Care recommends the following when preparing to care for a child transitioning to a new Astral ventilator:
Partner with family caregivers to understand the timeline provided by their clinical team for the transition to the Astral ventilator. This information will help planning education for home and community care providers.
Carefully review all new and updated orders for home mechanical ventilation and note if the order indicates that the child is being changed to the new Astral ventilator.
Review education resources offered by Connected Care regarding education about the Astral unit as soon as possible, when informed about a child’s transition to the new device. We suggest
